Question:
My girlfriend is on the pill, Ortho-tri-cyclene. We are now at the stage in our relationship where we have begun having sex. We are both disease-free people. During sex, I also use a condom for extra protection. My question is, how accurate is the pill? My girlfriend takes it religiously and never misses a pill. However, I just can't picture myself not wearing a condom. It's like driving a car without a seatbelt. Can you please assure me about the effectiveness of the pill? Thank you.

I am unable to give you specific percentages regarding effectiveness of this pill however I would feel that the pills are very effective although generally not 100%. It sounds like using a condom is generally not a big deal for you and is a natural part of having sex. Given how relaxed you are about the condom and that it is like using a seat belt, I would suggest continuing the routine that you are using. The extra protection is probably not a bad idea. I would suggest that you have your girlfriend also speak to her ob/gyn doctor regarding the effectiveness of the pill. Once you get some more accurate information the two of you can make more of an informed decision.Good luckReviewed by Sexual Health Editorial Team
