Question:
i'm 18 years old, and within the last few months have become sexually active with my boyfriend, we both lost our virginities to eachother so we are both new at the whole sexual relationship thing.
i was concerned about becomming pregnant so i went on birth control, ortho tri-cyclen, my mom doesn't know that i'm having sex and so i need to ask a health question, so that she wouldn't be too curious.
I recently have had really foul smelling urine, i hate to be graphic, but it smells like really strong sea water, or salt water, and is also cloudy. i was thinking a yeast infection, but i wasn't sure.
It is a little painful to urinate towards the end, but there isn't the typical itching of a yeast infection. i've had a yeast infection before, and around the same time, my urine was cloudy also, but didn't smell, i wasn't sure if it was connected or not...
i don't really know what it is, and don't know if it's serious enough to go to the doctors, or worse, my mother... do you know what i might have?? thank you!

I am not sure what you have but it sounds as if you may have an infection. It may or may not be a yeast infection. You didn't mention how long you have been on birth control pills (and congratulations for being responsible and making certain you don't get pregnant) and it may be that the pills are changing the PH enviroment in your urinary tract. It is good that you are drinking lots of water and you may want to add cranberry juice as this will change the PH naturally.
I suggest that you should see a gynecologist and let them take some samples to determine what, if any, infection you may have. This is not something that is serious and probably will have simple solution. Yet, I would take care of it so you don't have the pain and discomfort.
One other possibility is that you have contracted an infection from your boyfriend and that will need to be cleared up in both of you. I don't know what his past sexual history is but sometimes males get an infection, harbor it in their urinary tract and never know they have it. The symptoms then show up in their female partner. That is why I suggest that you see a doctor. If it is an infection both of you may need medication to treat it.Reviewed by Sexual Health Editorial Team
