Question:
I have a question about my 10 year-old daughter. She was at a cottage with my relatives when she fell off her bike and hurt her genital area. She was in a lot of pain, blood came out and she couldn't "pee" for awhile. My question is whether or not there is a hymen trauma, and, if there is, what are the possible consequences (physical and/or psychological). I will definetely go see a doctor with her. Thank you, Worried mother Helen

Thank you for writing with your concern! I am very glad that you are doing what you can to be sure that your daughter's trauma is minimized! First of all, you would be wise to have your daughter examined. It is possible that she has just some local swelling -- and you want to be sure that it is just simple swelling and that it resolves. Your daughter will probably feel very modest about his examination -- and it is important that it be explained to her carefully and that the examiner be respectful of her boundaries. Good luck, and I hope that all turns out well!
