Yes, it’s possible for her to become pregnant without having intercourse. Search our site using the phrase “pregnancy without intercourse” for more details as to why. You can only know if she’s pregnant by taking a pregnancy test after she’s missed a menstrual cycle. Tests are sold over the counter, but a clinic or doctor does the most reliable test. I think you are asking about an alternative to surgical abortion when you ask about overcoming the pregnancy without an operation. Non-surgical abortion or abortion by pill is a relatively new method to terminate pregnancy for early pregnancies (below 7-9 weeks of pregnancy from the first day of the last menstrual period, confirmed by ultrasound dating). Medications such as Ru-486 (Mifeprex) are used to cause the pregnancy to stop growing & be expelled in a manner similar to a miscarriage. The benefits, side effects, and alternatives must be discussed at length with a doctor. This method is appealing to some, but not ideal for every woman. After taking such medications the woman will have lower abdominal cramping pain, bleeding, nausea, vomiting, & diarrhea, which may be extreme in some cases. It’s absolutely necessary for the woman to return to her doctor after the initial medication for a follow-up exam & ultrasound to ensure the successful completion of the procedure. You should also know that in a few cases non-surgical abortions are not successful, & the abortion must be completed immediately with a standard, surgical abortion. Failure to have the surgical procedure after a failed non-surgical abortion can lead to complications, such as continuous, profuse blood loss that may require a blood transfusion, or a continuing pregnancy with birth defects. Your choice to explore ways of lovemaking without intercourse is a form of birth control, & you’ve shown your concern by contacting us, but you can show your caring even further by speaking openly about sex with your girlfriend. You can use this situation as an opportunity to begin a deeper level in your relationship & personal growth for you both, by talking about this incident. If you feel confused about what's right for you, begin by talking directly & honestly to one another about your confusion. Be sure to get information you & your girlfriend need from our website, searching the web, &/or reading. I recommend "Our Bodies, Ourselves For The New Century," a book by & for women about health & sexuality, or, "Changing Bodies, Changing Lives," a book about sex & relationships. Both are by The Boston Women's Health Collective. Good luck & don’t hesitate to contact us again
