Dr. Owens is Chief Medical Officer and co-founder of The Sexual Health Network. She originates from Denmark and has resided in Charlottesville, Virginia since 1991. She received a MD degree at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark in 1990, and a PhD degree in Vascular Physiology in 1996 from the same university. In the United States, she is certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG)and as a sex counselor by The American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT).

A member of European as well as American societies for the study of human sexuality, Dr. Owens provides general counseling about sexuality issues at the Charlottesville Sexual Health & Wellness Clinic.

Dr. Owens specializes in clients of any sexual orientation, with sexual dysfunctions, and people with chronic illnesses, physical handicaps, and disabilities.

She is Book Review Editor at The Electronic Journal of Human Sexuality and she has published a number of recent book reviews on that site as well as on her own website www.CvilleWellness.com. Her website also features a number of articles on the impact of various diseases, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, multiple sclerosis, etc. on sexuality. She also has a popular essay on childbirth and sexuality on her site.
