Michael A. Perelman, M.S., M.Phil., Ph.D.

Biography: Dr. Michael A. Perelman is the Co-Director of the Human Sexuality Program, Payne Whitney Clinic of the New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. He has been affiliated with this program, founded by his late mentor Dr. Helen S. Kaplan, for over twenty-five years. He previously served as Associate Director, Director of Research, Director of Training, and Senior Consulting Supervisor. He holds a joint appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He is also a Senior Consulting Psychologist to the Sexual Function Unit of New York Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell Medical Center’s Department of Urology. Additionally, he is the Senior Consulting Sex Therapist to the Department of Urology at Greenwich Hospital. He is also the Senior Consulting Psychologist/Sex Therapist at the NY Center for Human Sexuality, Department of Urology, Columbia University, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. A National Institute of Mental Health Fellow, he received his MS, M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in clinical psychology from Columbia University, writing the first sex therapy doctoral dissertation in Columbia’s history. Dr. Perelman was Chief Intern in Medical Psychology at Duke University Medical Center. Subsequently, he did a fellowship at the Institute for Behavior Therapy, where he later served as Director of Training from 1977 to 1980. He was a 1974 Postdoctoral Fellow in sex therapy at Cornell’s Human Sexuality Program of the Payne Whitney Clinic, New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Perelman is a New York State certified psychologist and is listed in the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. He maintains an independent practice in Manhattan, specializing in sex and marital therapy. He is certified by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) as a sex educator, therapist and supervisor. He has served on several boards of directors including The Society for Sex Therapy and Research and AASECT. Dr. Perelman was a member of the Psychotherapy Advisory Group to the Impotence Institute of America. He is a member of over twenty other professional societies, including the American Psychological Association, the American Urological Association, and the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex, and the Society for the Study of Impotence. He has served as consulting editor for a variety of professional journals, currently including the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy and “Contemporary Urology.” He co-authored Late Bloomers, published by Macmillan, with Carol Colman. He consults to industry; a partial list of recent clients includes Pfizer, TAP, Vivus, HBO, Falk Comm, Healthology.com, MEC and Ogilvy & Mather. Dr. Perelman has published a number of chapters in sex therapy texts and has presented numerous papers at professional meetings, as well as having his work in sex and marital therapy frequently featured in the media.
