Biography: The Sexual Health Network mourns the loss of James C. Achtzehn, Jr., 63, who passed away on November 10, 2003. Jim had been part of The Sexual Health Network for many years and will be greatly missed. Despite his illness for the past few years he always felt strongly about being involved in providing people accurate sexual health information.

He moved to the Washington area in 1973 to accept a faculty position at Gallaudet College, now Gallaudet University, the worldÂ’s only liberal arts university serving deaf and hard of hearing students. He remained on the faculty there in the Department of Education until his retirement as Professor in late 1999 was necessitated by his failing health.

During his years at Gallaudet, he served as a teacher, professor, researcher, writer, coordinator of graduate practicum, supervisor of student teaching, and a sought-after academic advisor to students in the Department of Education. Early in his career, Dr. Achtzehn became a strong advocate for education in the area of human sexuality, particularly focusing on the needs of deaf and hard of hearing students at all age levels. He had a national and international reputation for his groundbreaking work on the intersection of human sexuality and the education of deaf and hard of hearing children. His progressive ideas opened a dialogue between parents and professionals that was long overdue, and changed the scope of the curriculum in many schools. Through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, he developed a special program, Preventing Abuse of Children through Education for Sexuality, for use in schools and programs for the deaf and hard of hearing.
