Sexual Health eBook Volume3
Chapter 8

Native American Culture and Sex, Terry Tafoya

The sexuality of Native Americans and the Canadian People of the First
Nations represents a complexity that is difficult to understand in Western cultures, even on as fundamental a level as gender classification. This complexity is even more confusing when one does not have a historical understanding of how the American and Canadian federal governments intervened (in some cases, with the threat of violence) in the psychological, social, cultural, and sexual development of their aboriginal inhabitants. Natives in both nations have faced even greater challenges in the jurisdictional confusion of treaties signed with the federal governments, which provided them with a unique status and rights, as well as the legal position of “nations within nations.” For these reasons, this chapter will examine sexuality in Native American cultures in light of a historical framework and harsh realities that must be understood in order to make sense of just some of the difficulties and challenges facing Native people in North America, particularly from the perspective of healthy sexuality.
