Chapter 10

Eros in the Dragon Empire:  The Open Door to Sex in China, Judy Kuriansky

How do I give a woman an orgasm? Does every woman have a G spot? What can a man do to last longer? These questions, common in America, are now typically asked by Chinese men and women—a sign that the once closed and traditional country is undergoing its own quickening sexual revolution.

China is a country with a rich history of sex manuals, art, and practices dating back over 4,000 years, all of which were strictly controlled and suppressed in the last century. But the past decade has seen a dramatic new openness about sexuality, with exponential advances rivaling those of the sexual revolution in the United States that has taken place over the past 50 years. Surveys, studies, and clinical cases reveal that an increasing number of men, women, and couples are unhappy with their relationships and suffer from sexual problems (Ruan & Lau, 2004). Factors such as China’s entry into the global market and the World Trade Organization, exposure to Western ways especially through the Internet, and even hosting the upcoming 2008 Olympics have all contributed to the opening door of Chinese society in general.

An ancient Chinese idiom asserts, “May you live in interesting times.” These are certainly interesting times in China regarding sexuality. This chapter summarizes central historical events and the current status of sex and sexuality in China, including the clash of modern trends and ancient traditions, emergence of contemporary sexual problems, pioneer training programs of health practitioners, and collaborations between American and Chinese professionals, all of which are interwoven with my extensive firsthand experience of the country over many years of giving training courses, workshops, and lectures for professionals and the public, as well as conducting research and working with the media, throughout the vast country of China.
