Sexual Health eBook Volume2
Chapter 7

Pregnancy and sexuality, Woet L. Gianotten

In this chapter we will look from various perspectives at sexuality in the period between becoming pregnant and one year after childbirth. We will try to answer questions such as, What is the influence of pregnancy on sexual behavior? Which sexual behaviors are dangerous? How does sex before pregnancy affect delivery and the baby? What happens with the male partner? What is the reaction of the couple during the transition to parenthood? And we will start with the question of how sex can prevent preeclampsia (a potentially dangerous rise in the woman’s blood pressure, often also affecting kidney function) during pregnancy.

This chapter will mainly focus on existing information about couples experiencing their first pregnancies and deliveries, not because other groups are not important, but because we do not know much about other groups. Not only heterosexual couples wish to have children, but lesbian women also frequently want children, get pregnant, and deliver, and gay men and couples sometimes adopt children. There are several studies about lesbian mothers growing families. Despite many concerns about the well-being of these children, no adverse effects of this alternative family structure have been identified regarding the development of these children (Chan, Raboy, & Patterson, 1998; Golombok, 2002).
