Chapter 6

Sexual Anatomy and Physiology:  An overview, Marcy Vogel

Human sexuality is a fascinating topic. Most of the current research and publications address psychological, sociological, or behavioral factors. Similarly, college textbooks devote a predominance of their chapters to the foregoing arenas. Biology seems to be the underaddressed stepsister. In the biology of human sexuality class that I taught, my graduate students often came with concerns about biology being “too confusing,” “diffcult,” and “not really important.”

Many of us have enjoyed Disneyland or Disney World, riding the rides and watching the street shows. We are drawn into the excitement, the thrill, and the fascination. Very few of us take the opportunity to explore the world beneath the streets of Disney, the underpinnings that make the whole experience work. Those few tourists who go beneath the surface soon develop a special appreciation and a keen understanding for the functioning of Disney. Yes, it costs extra money and takes some time, but learning about the underpinnings enhances our experience above the streets.

Having new eyes to see human sexuality with the basis of biology also enriches our knowledge of sexual psychology, sociology, and behavior. We may have to learn a new language, that of biology and medicine; we may have to read slower to grasp unfamiliar concepts or study diagrams to understand the biological landscape; however, the unfamiliar struggles become time well spent when the “ah ha” moment occurs, signaling we really understand how it all works.

This chapter addresses the anatomical and physiological underpinnings of human sexuality. Because sexual biology is complicated and detailed, the information that follows is not meant to be all-inclusive, but rather a one chapter exposé that covers biological sexual information as a review and refresher.
