Sexual Health eBook Volume2
Chapter 5

The Circulatory System, Annamaria Giraldi

The circulatory system is of great importance for the sexual response. In both men and women an increased blood flow to the genitalia is crucial for the physiological sexual response during sexual arousal. An impaired circulatory system with reduced blood flow to the genitals, on the other hand, can have a negative effect on the genital sexual response and may lead to sexual dysfunction.

The present chapter will focus on the blood supply of the male and female genitalia and its function in the sexual response as well as possible dysfunctions. As the blood flow to the genitalia is regulated by neurotransmitters, the most important innervation pathways as well as neurotransmitters will be described briefly in this chapter in context with the circulatory system. The role of the central nervous system will only be discussed briefly.
