Sexual Health eBook Volume2
Chapter 3

Hormone and Female Sexuality, Jannet Huang

Hormones play a central role in female sexuality, with important effects on the brain, sexual organs, and a woman’s general physical and psychological health.
Estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) are some of the gonadal hormones that are better understood. Research continues to uncover new hormones and mediators that have impact on female sexuality. This chapter will provide a basic overview on the physiology and mechanisms of action of these sex hormones. Emphasis will be placed on how these hormones act in concert as well as how they interact with the overall physiology and psychology of an individual woman.

In particular stages of a woman’s life, such as the postpartum period (the time after having given birth) and perimenopause (the time before menopause), hormonal changes have profound effects on sexuality and general well-being. Case studies will be used to illustrate these effects.

This chapter will also explore the signs and symptoms of the androgen insufficiency syndrome in women that has recently been defined. A critical review of currently available clinical trial data will clarify the actual risks and benefits of hormone therapy using estrogen and progestins. The value of being estrogen-replete and the effects of androgen replacement will also be discussed.
