State STD Morbidity Data:The California Department of Public Health reported that, in 2010, there were 155,300 chlamydia infections, 26,840 gonorrhea infections and 2,059 syphilis infections in the state. The rate of chlamydia and gonorrhea have significantly increased from 2009 and are mostly seen in 20- to 24-year-old individuals. Meanwhile, the rate of syphilis has stayed mostly consistent through the 1990s and 2000s.

California has the second highest rate of AIDS among all 50 states in the U.S., and health officials also reported 160,293 HIV cases that transitioned to AIDS from the beginning of the epidemic in the early 1980s through December 2008, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC has provided the state with $62,060,262 for HIV and AIDS outreach measures.

In California, chlamydia was diagnosed in 400 out of every 100,000 people in 2010, and accounts for 82 percent of diagnosed STDs in the state
In 2010, gonorrhea was reported in 69.1 individuals out of 100,000
The rate of syphilis cases in 2008 was 6 out of 100,000 tested people, and is ranked ninth highest among all 50 states.

More than 19 million Americans each year are infected with a STD, and only a fraction are actually diagnosed since symptoms are not always present. This may cause individuals to unknowingly spread infections to others. To avoid transmission, the California Department of Public Health recommends that most men and women get tested annually for common STDs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. Additionally, pregnant women should be screened during their first trimester.
