Saturday, December 1st is World AIDS Day. What does that mean? Besides Starbucks‘ fabulous annual (RED) partnership campaign (buy an Eggnog Latte on December 1st and 5 cents of your drink will be donated!), it means that one day each year outshines the rest in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The mission is to eliminate stigma toward the virus internationally, raise funds for organizations in hot pursuit of finding a cure, and raise awareness to make education, prevention, and medication accessible to all who need it.
In the U.S. currently, HIV infections are hitting black male youth hardest. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP), 45% of new infections fall within the 13 to 24-year-old age group. 1,000 new diagnoses are made in this bracket each month. We have made great strides in public awareness, but this epidemic continues and demands even further awareness.
So on Saturday, December 1, 2012 from 10AM-11AM CST, SexualHealth.com’s Medical Director, Dr. Lisa will be on Twitter for a live chat to answer questions and get out the word about World AIDS Day 2012 and HIV/AIDS prevention. Follow Dr. Lisa at @LisaOldson; follow World AIDS Day on Twitter at #WAD2012, and follow SexualHealth.com’s Twitter chat at #SHWAD.
Other good resources are Words AIDS Day UK, The Body, and the AIDS Foundation of Chicago.
Wear your brightest red on Saturday. Wear it with a latte. Wear it with awareness.
