A New Oral Drug For Erectile Dysfunction by Annette Owens, MD PhD
The Bayer Corporation, best known to consumers for its aspirin products and One-A-Day vitamins, is currently developing a new drug for erectile dysfunction. So far, the new drug, Vardenafil, has shown promising results. As recently published in the World Journal of Urology, the drug was generally well tolerated and it significantly improved penile rigidity and tumescence, in other words, erections, in men with mild to moderate erectile difficulties. Vardenafil acts very similar to Viagra (Sildenafil), however its actions are supposedly faster and more specific, possibly with fewer side effects. Vardenafil is currently being evaluated in Phase III clinical trials, with results expected for publication later this year, and completion of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) review in the second half of 2002, so it is too early to draw any final conclusions. Be on the lookout for more information about Vardenafil over the next few months.
